News
It has been a busy year and long winter for Lodge 10; however, I am glad to say spring has officially arrived. Redfield and surrounding areas will have a water filled spring ahead as many plans have been put into place concerning the upcoming flood for Spink County. No matter the flood, Lodge 10 is preparing for upcoming events that are in the plans for this year as well as brainstorming possible fundraising ideas, ways to improve the Lodge, and regular meetings to enjoy the company of our members as well as maintaining a smaller, but yet strong Lodge. In the last year, Lodge 10 kept busy with many activities, donations, and community involvement exercises including a kids fishing derby, F.O.P. Cops and Kids, basketball tournaments, donations to the cub scouts and Tae Kwon Do club, as well as offering scholarships to the local high schools. Whether it’s a bullhead, a five pound common carp, or simply watching a red and white bobber floating in the water, the kids are happy at the end of the F.O.P. Fishing Tournament as they chow down hotdogs and chips provided by Lodge 10. The fishing tournament, held at Redfield Lake, is always a hit with families, especially the anglers competing in the competition. At the 2009 fishing tournament we welcomed nearly twenty-five kids whom all received a prize at the end of the day. The prizes varied from a pack of jig-heads and tackle boxes, to brand new fishing poles awarded to the winners of the tournament. An angler is awarded as the winner for weighing in the most pounds of fish in several different age divisions. The bait is donated by Mike Rogers, owner of Pheasant Country Repair in Redfield, making it easier for the anglers. The anglers need to show up with a fishing pole, grab the bait, cast out the line and cross your fingers to catch a fish or two! Once again, Lodge 10 awarded several youngsters the opportunity to take part in a special experience during the holiday season through F.O.P. Cops and Kids. The kids enjoy the experience by having the opportunity to shop for their families at the local Alco department store in Redfield while F.O.P picked up the tabs. Members of the lodge shared this experience with the kids and helped them with any questions or concerns they may have had. Christmas is a joyful time of year and this adds to the overall experience for the Lodge and the families we work with. The Lodge hosted a basketball tournament in Redfield in October. Teams participating in the girl’s tournament were Clark, Milbank, Groton, Willow Lake, and Redfield. The tournament was played from early morning into the afternoon by bracket style competition. During the tournament, the Lodge sponsored a free throw shooting competition where all members of each team shot five free throws. All free throws were tallied and the highest number made by an individual won a basketball donated by Lodge 10. This tournament is an excellent fundraiser for our lodge specifically fueled by concession sales. In the past few months, Lodge 10 has made several financial donations to groups including a Tae Kwon Do club and the local Cub Scouts in Redfield, who were replacing their pine wood derby track. Helping local and surrounding communities this year has been a great experience for Lodge 10 members. Community members truly appreciate the assistance we provide and we want to help as much as we can. Lodge 10 continually brainstorms ideas for new fundraisers and we believe we are on the right path by possibly starting a sporting clays shoot. If all goes well, we will continue to strive to be the best Lodge we can by supporting our community, our Lodge, and our members.
